A tryst with Minimalism : Owning stuff which serves the purpose

I had been fascinated with this since a long time and wanted to explore how I personally feel about it. Lets first start with what do you mean by minimalism.

"It means to own lesser amount of goods that would support my purpose of living and to get rid of excess clutter which you would not use"

Clutter removal I feel is synonymous with the having a peace of mind and it has been my way also for achieving spiritual awareness. You would ask how? Well lets take a small example you have a small desk which is cluttered with all the unnecessary items which you think you would need however you haven't even used since last couple of months. Now when you remove it or basically get rid of it. There is less of anxiety and you feel motivated to do your stuff. For you what is more good to look at? 1st or 2nd one I believe the 2nd one and spirituality also aims at having peace of mind and to be clutter free is another way of reaching it.

In this globalized era where we want to move a lot and having a lot of stuff translates to stuck money and a big headache. Even we are in process of making sure we do not own a lot of unnecessary stuff which would built up our initial inertia . A minimalist lifestyle is not giving up necessary stuff but all the extra stuff which you do not use or have not used since a long time.

Few things which would be helpful:

1) Analyze the stuff at hand:

We all end up hoarding (Buying/Collecting stuff) which we think we might end up using. Analyze the stuff you have the utensils, clothes , books , gadgets , blankets etc. First having understanding what you actually have will set the tone of reducing the unnecessary stuff.

2) Make a list of stuff you haven't used for a long while:

There are so many items which you might have not used since last couple of months lets say 6 months and that is a sign that you would even use it ahead. It is just blocking the space and even the mind by creating unnecessary anxiety. I can take an example of few coats or clothes and books which I think are imp and you know what those books I have been dragging since last 4 Years from Delhi to Kolkata to Mumbai and now Prague. Still haven't used and thinking I will need it some time.

3) Resell and donate whatever you can

This was something I was not very fond of with the hassles that come with it . Thanks to my husband now I know there exists a second hand markets which you can make a very good use of. We end up selling my old gadgets at the reduced prices. Additionally there exists something called as a thrift stores where you can donate your clothes or to few charities or few collection drives at your office.

4) Create space for new

Removing the clutter will create space for newer items which you had thought you need. We got rid of few utensils which we felt were either not required we got some stuff back from India. Then we analyzed what we have and we went to Ikea. We got what we thought was missing and what might be important to complete the set we had. I was so happy that I have something what I need and it fulfills my purpose rather than stocking unnecessary items.

Removing clutter is a journey would not happen in a day. The first step towards it is the right step :)
